Driving in heavy traffic is easier said than done. Even though it’s slow-moving, there are many challenges standing between you and your final destination. Not only do you have to protect yourself against mistakes by other drivers, but you also have to consider the rules of the road. All of that leads to a situation in which it’s easy to violate the law.

- Illegal passing: This takes on many forms, such as using the shoulder of the road to pass slow-moving vehicles. It sounds like a great way to make time, but it’s both dangerous and a violation of the law.
- Failure to signal: In slow-moving traffic, you may find yourself moving from lane to lane. When doing so, it’s critical that you use your turn signals. This tells other drivers what you’re doing, while also protecting against a run-in with the law.
- Running a red light: When a traffic light is red, you’re expected to stop and stay where you are until it turns green. However, when you’re creeping at a slow speed, you may be tempted to speed through a red light.
If you commit a traffic violation that results in a ticket, don’t do anything until you understand the charges and your legal rights.
You may be tempted to pay the ticket, move on and hope it doesn’t affect you too much, but that’s a mistake that could cost you in the long run. You’re better off understanding your legal rights and how to protect them, such as by fighting back in traffic court.
